April 10: Psalm 88

Psalm 88

“For my soul has had enough troubles” (v3).  In this psalm of despair, David says “Enough.”  His collection of troubles had grown too heavy to bear, and “I am overcome” (v15).  He was without strength (v4), alone (v8,18), and apparently near death (v5,6).  No one around him was capable or willing to rescue him.  So he cried out to the One who always hears and always answers: “O Lord, the God of my salvation” (v1).

“Salvation,” in the Bible, is more than being saved from hell.  As David knew, God is also able to save us in the present from despair, from sin, and from ourselves.
