April 16: Psalm 89

Psalm 89

“Lovingkindness will be built up forever; in the heavens Thou wilt establish Thy faithfulness” (v2).  In a time of broken walls and defeat (v38-45), the psalmist remembered God’s covenant with King David (and by extension, Israel).  He remembered that God had said, “My lovingkindness I will keep for him forever” (v28).  Even if his descendents disobeyed and were punished, God promised not to violate the covenant (v35,36).  David’s throne would endure because God is faithful.

Our hope is not in our own ability to please God but in God’s unfailing kindness.  “If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself” (II Tim 2:13).
