Job 32-33
“Behold, God does all these oftentimes with men, to bring his soul back from the pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of life” (33:29-30). Elihu’s speeches have a strange mixture of truth and falsehood. Elihu correctly saw the majesty and power of God, yet he mistakenly assumed that God must be trying to discipline Job, “to bring back his soul from the pit.” He wanted Job to “learn a lesson” from his suffering.
Sometimes, the only clear “lesson” of suffering is that God is with us. He who suffered on the cross understands our pain and comes to comfort us.
