April 28: I Corinthians 4

I Corinthians 4

"Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will ... disclose the motives of men's hearts" (v5). The believers of Corinth were apparently evaluating Paul's work, as well as the work of Apollos and others (v3), with worldly methods of assessment. While Paul urged them to judge sin inside the church (5:9-13), he cautioned them against spiritual arrogance (4:7) and other kinds of judgment.

Appearances can be deceiving, in and out of church (v11-13). Only God knows our motives, thoughts, and efforts. Only God can say "well done" (v5).
