Ecclesiastes 6-8
“No man has authority to restrain the wind with the wind, or authority over the day of death …” (8:8). Like the proverbs, the message of Ecclesiastes is humility. Rich and intelligent people (like King Solomon) seem to control their lives, but it is only an illusion. Technology and “choices” give us the same illusion today. But Ecclesiastes reminds us that much of life is mysterious and outside our control (7:13-14; 8:14,17).
This acknowledgement of our limitations doesn’t have to produce fear. We can live, work, create, and love, because God is in charge of the world.
