"Be on guard, that your hearts may not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life ...praying in order that you may have the strength to escape all these things" (v34-36). Jesus warned his friends that cataclysmic, terrible days were coming. As His followers, they would be hauled before authorities ("it will lead to an opportunity for your testimony"), and some would die (v12-19). But no one would "perish" - eternally, spiritually, they were safe.
We don't know the future. Jesus said to be prepared, to stay sharp, ready to withstand temptation, ready for His return.
