August 22: Psalm 44

Psalm 44

“For Thy sake we are killed all day long, we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered” (v22).   The psalmist remembered God’s miracles “in the days of old” (v1).  Back then, God drove out Israel’s enemies and planted them in the Promised Land.  But now, Israel was “a laughingstock among the peoples” (v14).  This humiliation and failure seemed unfair to the psalmist, especially when “we have not forgotten Thee” (v17).

Paul quoted this psalm, reminding believers that earthly failure doesn’t mean God has abandoned us (Rom 8:36).  No matter what, we “overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us” (v37).
