August 27: Proverbs 27

Proverbs 27

“As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects man” (v19).  The proverbs emphasize truth and humility as the bedrocks of a good life.  We don’t boast about the future (v1), because only God knows.  We don’t praise ourselves (v1), because false pride can make us blind to our own faults.  And when we have to choose between painful truth and attractive lies, we choose truth (v5-6).

There are no secret “keys” to a good life.  As we nurture our heart’s desires in godly or ungodly ways, they are reflected in our choices.   “He who tends the fig tree will eat its fruit” (v18).
