Jeremiah 1-2
“They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters” (2:13). Judah (southern kingdom of Israel) had rejected God in favor of a life that was polluted and deficient: “broken cisterns that can hold no water” (v13). Their lack of faith was reflected in all kinds of sin: idolatry (2:20), mistreating the poor (v34), and trying to make alliances with pagan nations like Egypt and Assyria (v18).
Judah thought the good things of life were “out there” – outside the moral boundaries of Abraham’s God. But we can only find “the fruitful land” (v7) within His kingdom.
