August 7: Ecclesiastes 11-12

Ecclesiastes 11-12

“He who watches the wind will not sow and he who looks at the clouds will not reap” (11:4). Again, the “Preacher” urges us to stop trying to control the future. Wisdom certainly includes planning and hard work, but there is a point at which excessive anxiety about the future is paralyzing. The Scriptures, old and new, constantly remind us that the future is not in our hands (James), but deep trust in the God of the future gives us the freedom to live in the present without fear.

“You do not know the activity of God who makes all things” (v5). No matter what our work is, God is ultimately the One in charge of the harvest.
