August 7: Psalm 41

Psalm 41

“How blessed is he who considers the helpless” (v1).  We are generally attracted to beautiful, successful people, probably because we think their success will lift us up.  When the psalmist found himself sick, cast down, temporarily one of the helpless, his friends’ true natures were revealed.  Instead of reaching out to him (which perhaps they had done when he was prosperous), even his close friends rejected him (v9).  They wanted nothing to do with his brokenness.

God is merciful to us in our suffering, and when we follow His lead with the hurting people around us, we are “blessed upon the earth” (v2).
