Zechariah 1-3
“Jerusalem will be inhabited without walls … For I, declares the Lord, will be a wall of fire around her, and I will be the glory in her midst” (2:5). God told those who were trying to rebuild Jerusalem that something better was coming. It wasn’t enough for Jerusalem to simply be a fortified city again. God wanted to fulfill His original purpose to live among His redeemed people, to be “the glory in her midst” (2:5, 11).
Jerusalem “without walls” meant that this new community would be guarded by God and open to everyone, because of His great mercy. “Many nations … will become My people” (2:11).
