February 20: Psalm 79

Psalm 79

“Let Thy compassion come quickly to meet us, for we are brought very low” (v8).  The psalmist and other Old Testament writers believed as strongly in God’s compassion as they did in His justice.  Jerusalem and its citizens were “in ruins” (v1), and the people knew their own rebellion was partly responsible.  Remembering their Creator, they called out, “forgive our sins, for Thy name’s sake” (v9).  Consider that we are “the sheep of Thy pasture” (v13).

We can count on God’s compassion, revealed in Jesus Christ, who suffered for us.  He is willing to save us from the darkness inside and around us.
