February 5: II Chronicles 24-25

II Chronicles 24-25

“Why have you sought the gods of the people who have not delivered their own people from your hand?” (25:15).  After Amaziah dismissed his paid mercenaries, God helped him defeat the sons of Seir.  Bizarrely, after the battle, Amaziah collected the enemy’s idols “and bowed down before them” (v14).  Even after seeing God’s power, he was fatally attracted to the visible gods of his culture.

Amaziah was only doing what was normal for most people.  Paul warned believers not to underestimate daily temptation, but to be “on the alert” and to “put on the full armor of God that you may be able to stand firm” (Eph 6).
