February 9: Genesis 38

Genesis 38

“She is more righteous than I” (v26). While Joseph was growing and learning to trust God, life was going on for his brothers. Experience by experience, Jacob’s sons had to decide what path they would follow. Reuben slept with his step-mother (35:22), Simeon and Levi slaughtered a town (ch 34), and Judah slept with his daughter-in-law, thinking she was a prostitute. As a group, they were far from holy. But God was at work, giving opportunities for repentance and change.

Judah recognized his wrong in Tamar’s case, and admitted it. As always, this was the first step toward redemption.
