January 1: Genesis 1

This week is the beginning of a new three-year cycle of our daily Bible reading program.  If you’ve never used “manna” as part of your personal Bible study, this is a great time to join us!   During this cycle, all quotations will come from the English Standard Version of the Bible, but you may read in whatever version suits you best.  I look forward to hearing from God as we contemplate His Word together!

Genesis 1

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (v27).  Three times in this chapter, the author repeats that God made humans “in his own image.”  When we consider how God revealed Himself through the creation story, it seems remarkable.  God is the joyful Creator.  He spoke the universe into existence, and then He celebrated it: “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good” (v31).

As humans, we can never be satisfied with just surviving.  We glorify God by working within His world wisely and creatively, and celebrating the result.
