January 12: Genesis 11

Genesis 11

“Come, let us build for ourselves a city …” (v4). City-building is natural to humans; we want to create orderly, comfortable places where we can live and work in peace. But these city-and-tower builders wanted “to make for ourselves a name”; they wanted power and fame, not just security. Without God, their skills and intelligence became dangerous (v6). In contrast, God told Abraham that He had great plans to make Abraham a blessing to others, through Abraham’s obedience.

When we let go of selfishness and submit to God, He uses our skills and gifts for His glory, as a blessing to the world.
