January 18: Matthew 5

Matthew 5

“For I say to you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven” (v20). Jesus turned the world upside down by declaring that our main trouble is located inside ourselves, not outside ourselves. The Mosaic Law taught that stealing, murdering, and committing sexual crimes were wrong. But the Mosaic Law could not heal the brokenness of the human heart, which Jesus pointed out by His warnings against anger, lust, and pride (v21-48).

Only Jesus Himself can give us new hearts. By His Spirit we discover the freedom of the law of love.
