January 20: Genesis 14

Genesis 14

“And Abram gave him a tenth of everything” (v20).  We know very little about Melchizedek, “priest of God Most High” (v18).  But Abram recognized him as having authority and representing the Creator, and so Abram gave him a tenth of everything he had.  Hebrews says that Melchizedek was “king of peace” and “king of righteousness,” without father or mother, “having neither beginning of days nor end of life” (Hebrews 7:2).  Some think he was an appearance of the Son Himself.

Abram had defeated kings and owned great wealth.  But he humbled himself and gave away a tenth of his riches, honoring the true “Possessor of heaven and earth” (v19).
