Psalm 4
“You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound” (v7). The psalmist was tempted to idolize the world’s “good things”; he was tempted to “love vain words and seek after lies” (v2). But God showed him another way to deal with a troubled heart: “Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent … and put your trust in the Lord” (v4-5).
When our hearts are troubled, the safest place to be is in God’s presence. Then His light shines on us (v6), which is far better than when “grain and wine abound.”
