January 25: Psalm 74

Psalm 74

"They have burned Thy sanctuary to the ground ..." The Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem in the 6th century B.C. Solomon's Temple was the very best of Jewish architecture, worship, and wealth, and it was the heart of the community. Abraham's descendents worshiped the One God, uniquely, through the beauty and rituals of God's house. Yet Israel's enemies "smash with hatchet and hammers," said the poet, and the land was filled with violence.

"Thine is the day, Thine also is the night" (v16). When everything falls apart, faith remembers who God is, and what He can do.
