January 9: Psalm 71

Psalm 71

“For Thou art my hope; O Lord God, Thou art my confidence from my youth” (v5).  In his old age, the psalmist needed God’s comfort and strength more than ever.  He remembered the lessons of his youth, his experiences with God (v17), and he still put his trust in God’s faithfulness (v17-18).  He was surrounded by enemies but did not despair: “I will hope continually” (v14).

After many years and many challenges, the psalmist knew there was only one real place of safety, one true home.  God was still his “rock of habitation,” and his “strong refuge” (v3,7).
