Deuteronomy 22-23
“You are not allowed to neglect them” (22:3). The Mosaic Law takes the idea of personal responsibility quite far. Rather than simply looking out for their own families and farms, Israelites were commanded to treat other peoples’ property with respect, as well. A wandering ox, donkey, or lost garment couldn’t be ignored; a “good citizen” took responsibility for it until the owner claimed it. These habits built up mutual trust among neighbors, leading to a safer and more prosperous community.
God calls us to recognize the worth of people outside our own families, treating them with dignity as people God loves.
