July 23: Isaiah 61-62

Isaiah 61-62

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted” (61:1).  Jesus Christ read these words one day in a synagogue in Nazareth, and then said, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4).  Isaiah’s prophecy perfectly summarized Jesus’ purpose on earth.  God sent His Son to “bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners … (61:1).   This is still “the good news.”

Jesus carries on His work through us, by the Spirit’s power.  We are His Body, proclaiming and living out His good news until He returns.
