July 26: Psalm 109

Psalm 109

“O God of my praise, do not be silent!” (v1). The psalmist begged God to punish his enemies, who “have repaid me evil for good, and hatred for my love” (v5). He graphically described what he hoped God would do to them (v8-20). This is far from forgiving or praying for our enemies, the way Jesus taught. However, psalmist was pouring out his fear and anger to God, rather than turning to idols and false comfort.

Like Job, the psalmist demonstrated real prayer. Only then can God respond, touch our hearts, and begin to shape us into His image.
