July 6: Isaiah 42

Isaiah 42

“A bruised reed He will not break, and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish” (v3).  Isaiah’s picture of the coming Messiah is filled with gentleness.  He is the King, yet He chooses to cloak His power in humility, and His concern is for people who are hurting, blind, and bruised.  Matthew (ch 12) affirms that Jesus fulfilled this prophecy, and Jesus Himself proclaimed that He had arrived to “open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the dungeon” (Luke 4:18).

Jesus looked at our broken, sinful world with compassion.  Rather than punishing us, He gave His own life in order to rescue us.
