June 16: Deuteronomy 5

Deuteronomy 5

“The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, with all those of us alive here today” (v3).  God’s plan spans generations.  The Israelites knew He had promised to make Abraham a great nation, and they were part of this heritage.   God wanted to settle them (and their descendents) in the Promised Land, and through them to bless the world.  But Moses pointed out God’s very present, active, particular relationship “with all of us alive here today.”

We learn from the past and hope for the future, but we can only live and know God in the present.
