March 21: Romans 11

Romans 11

“But if it is by grace, it is not longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace” (v6). As Paul was writing, the Jews had mostly rejected the Messiah, and the Gentiles were accepting Him.  But Paul wanted the Gentiles to understand God’s continuing love for Abraham’s descedents (v29), and also to beware of pride.  The Gentiles were in God’s family by grace, not by their own righteousness (v17-20), and grace would also lead the Jews back home (v15).

God’s grace is beyond our expectations (v33).  No matter our background, He welcomes us as new branches of His “holy olive tree.”
