“Do you still hold fast your integrity?” (2:9). Integrity is being firm, whole, and undivided in principles and beliefs. Job was “blameless, upright, and fearing God,” but through tragedy his integrity was tested. Satan wanted to see if Job’s goodness would “hold together” or dissolve under the pressure of sorrow and pain. Even Job’s wife expected him to fall apart, to “curse God and die.” But Job’s loyalty to God stood firm. His prosperity had been a gift from God, and when it was taken away he still worshipped (
Job’s subsequent speeches reveal his anger, sorrow, and questions. But his integrity – his bedrock belief in God – remained.
