Nehemiah 3-4
“But we prayed to our God” (4:9). Nehemiah, governor of the Jewish community, was supervising the re-building of Jerusalem’s walls. Just as Ezra reported, their enemies opposed the reconstruction. Sanballat, a regional officials appointed by Persia, “became furious and very angry and mocked the Jews” (4:1). He ridiculed their ability to accomplish anything, “and all of them conspired together to come and fight against Jerusalem” (4:8). This constant opposition frightened the people, so that “the strength of the burden-bearers is failing” (v9).
“Our God will fight for us” (4:20). Under Nehemiah’s leadership, the people prayed, kept building, and remembered the One who was on their side.
