Exodus 31-32
“Come, make us a god who will go before us; as for this Moses … we do not know what has become of him” (32:1). The corrupted ways of the world feel very natural to us. The religious rituals of most ancient cultures involved visual images, as well as drunkenness and sexuality (v6). When the Israelites felt abandoned by Moses and unsure of what to do, anxious and perhaps a little bored, they easily slipped back into old patterns.
Anxiety, fear and boredom create a craving for control. We can fall back into sinful behaviors or trust the God who loves us.
