Mark 9:14-50

“Do not hinder him …” (v39).  Jesus’ friends were worried about people who “cast out demons in Your name” but weren’t  recognized as Jesus’ followers.  Like those who offered “a cup of cold water” to the disciples, these were people who recognized Jesus’ authority and acted on it, but had not yet claimed membership in the group.  Jesus said that this loving obedience (such as caring for a child, v37) was a reflection of the heart – a more reliable reflection than simply the label “disciple of Jesus.”

God is not impressed with labels or group identities.  He sees the devotion and obedience of our hearts.
