May 12: Ecclesiastes 5-6

Ecclesiastes 5-6

God “has also empowered him to eat from [his labor] and to receive his reward and rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God” (5:19).  The “prophet” looked around and saw that simply being wealthy doesn’t make people happy.  Many, no matter what they have, always want more and feel unsatisfied (v10), while others live joyfully with less.  This is a “severe evil” – to be blessed with possessions, children, health or other resources, but their “soul is not satisfied with good things” (6:3).

Paul said that learning contentment was “great gain” (I Tim 6:6).  True wealth is the ability to enjoy whatever God has given us.
