May 13: Nehemiah 3

Nehemiah 3

"Then Eliashib the high priest arose with his brothers the priests and built the Sheep Gate; they consecrated it and hung its doors" (v1). The high priest's main job was not to repair walls and doors; it was to lead the people in sacrifice and worship. However, without the safety and security of solid walls, the people could not worship freely in the rebuilt Temple. Even the high priest and his family took turns building and guarding as repairs were made.

Jerusalem's walls could only be rebuilt with cooperative, unselfish help from every member of the community.
