John 19
“We have no king but Caesar” (v15). Most people, past and present, reject Jesus in order to preserve authority over their own lives. We want to define good and evil for ourselves. Jesus, by His actions (washing His disciples’ feet) and teaching (blessed are the poor), demonstrated the goodness and authority of God’s kingdom, which demanded a response. After the cross, both Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus made their loyalty to Christ known (v38-42), despite the cost.
We can either remain loyal to the values of our world (selfishness, greed, and pride), or we can serve Jesus. We can only have one King.
