Proverbs 15
"He who neglects discipline despises himself, but he who listens to reproof acquires understanding" (v32). Good discipline is beneficial, not harmful, whether self-directed or from an external source. But we can't take advantage of it unless we recognize our need. "Before honor comes humility" (v33). If we neglect discipline (thinking we are just fine already), we cannot grow. Studying the scriptures, prayer, meeting with other believers for teaching and friendship - these practices transform us.
"The fear of the Lord" (v33) says that we were lovingly created for His purposes. He forgives our sins and pushes us on, toward maturity.
