November 19: I Kings 20-21

I Kings 20-21

“And Ahab said, 'I will let you go on these terms.'  So he made a covenant with him and let him go” (30:34).  One of King Ahab’s problems was that he made alliances with the wrong people.  First, he married Jezebel, the wicked daughter of a pagan king.  Jezebel committed terrible crimes (ch 21), and her influence led Ahab toward extreme idolatry (ch 16:29-33).  Now, after God helped him defeat the Syrians, Ahab let their king live and covenanted with him.

God’s covenant with Israel demanded absolute loyalty.  No one can serve two masters; we can’t belong to God and make alliances with the world.
