Psalm 58
"When he aims his arrows, let them be as headless shafts" (v7). Because we know God's mercy in Christ, sometimes the psalms of vengeance, like this one, surprise us. Yet, there have always been people who "work unrighteousness" (v2) with no thought of repentance, putting themselves in danger of judgment. The psalmist was plagued by these enemies, and he knew that only God could confront their powerful schemes. "Break out the fangs of the young lions," he prayed; rescue me.
Only God can remove the poison of the enemy's arrows. Only God can help us "overwhelmingly conquer" (Rom 8:37) through love.
