Amos 1-4
“Because he pursued his brother with the sword, while he stifled his compassion …” (1:11). The prophet Amos declared that God was going to judge Damascus, Gaza, Edom, Moab, Judah, Israel and others, because the people in these places lacked compassion and justice. They “sell the righteous for money and the needy for a pair of sandals” (2:6). They “oppress the poor, and crush the needy” (4:1), callous to the suffering of others. Amos warned that God wouldn’t tolerate this kind of behavior.
Loving God is inseparable from love of neighbor, because “the one who does not love does not know God” (I John 4:8).
