John 18
"If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting ... My kingdom is not of this realm" (v36). Therefore, Jesus was beaten, mocked, and crucified. His friends had no means by which to defend Him, nor did He want them to (v11). Jesus' authority had nothing to do with money or the approval of the Jewish/Roman governments. Through the centuries since, believers have struggled to remain loyal to His kingdom.
Like Peter, we sometimes make compromises to gain the approval of earthly powers. Jesus calls us to seek first His kingdom, no matter the cost.
