I Samuel 19-20
"For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established" (20:31). David's popularity was rising. Saul knew, should David live, the kingdom would be his. King Saul warned his son Jonathan not to choose friendship over his own future. But loyal Jonathan risked his life to protect David (v33). He asked only that, when David was king, "the Lord is between you and me forever" (v23).
Jonathan, like Ruth, redefined friendship. Their behavior points toward Jesus, who died for His friends and calls us to love in the same way.
