October 11: Psalm 124

Psalm 124

“Our soul has escaped as a bird out of the snare of the trapper …” (v7). The psalmist used poetry to describe his total helplessness in the face of sin, danger and despair. The “raging waters” of life threatened to drown him (v5). He was a bird caught in a trap, frightened and in pain. Yet, “blessed be the Lord,” who doesn’t wait for us to rescue ourselves, but sets us free (v1).

Whether we are trapped by our own mistakes, or suffering because of general darkness, “our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth” (v8).
