“Deacons likewise must be men of dignity …” (3:8). Paul’s instructions to men and women (ch 2) and overseers and deacons/servants (ch 3) are often analyzed for differences between the lists. But what is more remarkable (especially in the class- and gender-separated ancient world) is how similar Paul’s instructions are for each group. Faith, love, and self-discipline are mentioned several times, as well as prayer and humility. Both leaders and deacons were required to be committed to their families, kind, generous, and respected by others.
