I Timothy 2-3

“Deacons likewise must be men of dignity …” (3:8).  Paul’s instructions to men and women (ch 2) and overseers and deacons/servants (ch 3) are often analyzed for differences between the lists.  But what is more remarkable (especially in the class- and gender-separated ancient world) is how similar Paul’s instructions are for each group.  Faith, love, and self-discipline are mentioned several times, as well as prayer and humility.  Both leaders and deacons were required to be committed to their families, kind, generous, and respected by others. 

Whatever our task, our attitudes, words, and actions should reflect the One who is “proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world” (3:16).
