II Samuel 20-21
“It is for Saul and his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death” (21:1). Israel was enduring three years of famine, and God said it was because of unrecognized, unrepented sin. Though Israel had had a treaty with the Gibeonites, Saul had slaughtered them (v2). David knew that this tragedy had to be faced, and peace restored with the Gibeonites. He gave the Gibeonites seven of Saul’s sons and grandsons, which, however harsh, in that time was considered “justice.”
God doesn’t ignore the deaths of the innocent, nor any covered-up evil. We have to confront the truth about our lives before receiving His freedom and peace.
