John 18
“My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting …” (v36). Jesus had no interest in leading the Roman Empire; His Kingdom is far greater. In the garden (v10), Peter didn’t yet understand that Jesus had no need to be defended by swords. The disciples had seen Jesus demonstrate His authority over wind and sea, sickness and demons, but they didn’t know He was also king over sin and death.
“You say correctly I am a king” (v37). As citizens of Jesus’ kingdom by faith, we are called to cooperate with His loving and redemptive work in world.
