October 29: I Samuel 14

I Samuel 14

"Perhaps the Lord will work for us, for the Lord is not restrained to save by many or by few" (14:6). Jonathan showed humility in his use of "perhaps" - he was not dictating what the God of Israel should do. But Jonathan knew without doubt that God was able to defeat the Philistines "by many or by few." With courageous hearts, depending on God, Jonathan and his armor-bearer deliberately approached the Philistine camp and goaded them into battle.

Their God-given victory inspired the men "who had hidden themselves in the hill country" to forget their fears and join the battle.
