I Samuel 15
"But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep ... and all that was good ... but everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed" (15:9). Saul knew God's command: "strike Amalek and utterly destroy all that he has" (v3), but this didn't make sense to Saul and the people. Why should they lose the spoil? Why shouldn't they benefit from the battle? Saul chose to act on his own, rather than obey.
Saul tried to enrich himself with the treasure of a sinful society - the Amalekites. But his rebellion (v23) cost him his own kingdom.
