October 4: Psalm 122

Psalm 122

“May peace be within your walls, and prosperity within your palaces” (v7). How wonderful was the time when Jerusalem was at peace, when God’s people worshipped at the Temple without fear, and Israel’s kingdom was united. It was, unfortunately, a short-lived time, but the psalmist’s words evoke a longing for that God-centered city. Hebrews tells us there is something even better: “a kingdom which cannot be shaken,” which is “the heavenly Jerusalem” (Hebrews 12).

We can be part of that peaceful, stable, joyful kingdom right now. It is “the city of the living God,” and we are citizens through Jesus Christ.
