II Samuel 6-7
“How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” (6:9). Poor Uzzah didn’t seem to be doing anything wrong by trying to keep the ark from falling. However, God “struck him down for his irreverence” (7). Therefore, David was suddenly unsure that he wanted the ark in his city. Possibly this was God’s intent: to remind victorious, admired, beloved David that he was not a god. The ark was not a magic tool for increasing David’s personal power.
God had good purposes for David (ch 7), but only as long as David walked humbly. Then his life was a blessing to the world.
