Jeremiah 40-42
“Pray for us … whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, we will listen to the voice of the Lord” (42:2-6). After the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and forced its leaders into captivity, the Jews left behind in Judah were terrified. Gedaliah, their governor, had been murdered. They were considering fleeing into Egypt and asked Jeremiah to pray for them. However, just like king Zedekiah, they didn’t like God’s answer. They wanted God to confirm their plans, not challenge them to stay and live by faith.
“Do not be afraid” (42:11). When our minds are blocked by fear, we can’t hear God’s words of direction, encouragement, and peace.
